  • Condo: get written JMB or MC approval before any work.

Quick answer: If you already have the charger, KL and Selangor businesses list the fitting at RM900 to RM1,900, labour only, based on Voltara and EV Connection price pages (public prices, checked 20 Oct 2026). These are not Dispatcher quotes. An ST-registered contractor must do the wiring, and a condo needs written JMB or MC approval first.

What are the rules for a home EV charger?

You need an ST-registered contractor, a charger with the ST-SIRIM label, and a circuit just for the charger.

  • Only an ST-registered competent person or electrical contractor should do the wiring. TNB says do not do it yourself.
  • The charger must have the ST-SIRIM label.
  • Plugging the car straight into a normal wall socket (Mode 1) is not allowed.
  • The charger needs its own circuit with a 30 mA RCD. TNB asks for Type A with DC detection, or Type B.
  • Single-phase supply handles loads up to 10 kW (TNB). myTNB says landed homes may benefit from three-phase for a charger of 7 kW and above.
  • Faster 11 to 22 kW chargers need three-phase supply. Only TNB can approve the upgrade.
  • Ask for the test report when the job is done.

Live in a KL condo? Start with your JMB

This matters in condos and serviced apartments, for example in Mont Kiara, Bangsar or Setapak. The cable from your unit to your parking bay runs over common property. So you need written approval from your JMB or MC before any work starts.

  1. Read your building's by-laws. Ask management if there is an EV charging policy.
  2. Ask a registered contractor to check your DB box, your supply type and the cable route to your bay.
  3. Get the plan in writing. It should name the charger and its ST-SIRIM label, the cable size and route, and the RCD type.
  4. Send the plan to the JMB or MC with the contractor's ST registration. Pay any works deposit the building asks for.
  5. After the job, give the test report to management.

Is your bay far from your unit? Then the cable run is long and costs more. Ask management if the building can give you a sub-metered supply or shared chargers instead.

Landed home? Check these three things

  • Where you park. Porch, garage or basement. The quote depends on how far this is from your DB box.
  • Your supply. Single-phase or three-phase. A registered contractor can tell from your DB box.
  • Your DB box. An older board may need a new RCD or more space.

How to choose an EV charger business in KL

Pick the business whose written quote answers every line below. Then compare totals.

  • Gives an ST registration number you can look up on the Suruhanjaya Tenaga list.
  • Visits or asks for photos of your DB box, your supply and the route to your bay.
  • States how many metres of cable are included. Advertised fitting-only packages include 10 to 15 metres.
  • Names the RCD type and the MCB size.
  • Says if the cable goes in surface trunking or inside the wall.
  • Includes testing and a test report.
  • States the workmanship warranty.
  • Says whether the charger itself is included.
  • For a condo, offers to prepare the plan your JMB or MC will ask for.

Dispatcher has not checked any business's licence yet, so do the ST check yourself.

How much does it cost to put in a home EV charger in KL?

Where the money goes

Cable length. Most packages cover 10 to 15 m from your DB box to the charger. A porch next to the DB box fits inside that. A charger at the back of a terrace house, or a condo bay two floors down, may not. EVHOME charges RM30 to RM35 per extra metre past 15 m.

Surface or hidden. Cable in trunking on the wall is the standard price. EVHOME charges RM50 a metre to chase it into the wall, and says it does not paint or colour-match.

Your DB box. The charger needs its own breaker and a 30 mA RCD (Type A with DC detection, or Type B, per TNB). If your board has no free slot, that is extra work.

Earthing. If the earth test reads above 10 ohms, EVHOME adds an earth rod and pit for RM500. You only find this out on the day.

Three-phase. A 7 kW charger can run on single-phase. TNB's guide says single-phase supports loads up to 10 kW. myTNB says landed homes may benefit from three-phase for a charger of 7 kW and above. Only TNB can change your supply, and its connection charge is separate from the fitting price.

Before you compare two quotes

Line them up on the same points: metres of cable, surface or hidden, RCD type, which charger, and warranty. Warranties differ. Voltara gives 1 year on labour-only jobs and 2 years on its charger packages. EVHOME gives 12 months on workmanship, or 24 months on both when you buy its charger package. EV Connection asks for a RM300 site-visit deposit, refunded if you go ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need JMB approval to fit an EV charger in my KL condo?

Yes. The cable runs over common property, so you need written approval from your JMB or MC before any work starts.

How much does a home EV charger cost to set up in KL?

If you already have the charger, labour only is listed from RM900 to RM1,900 on single-phase, based on Voltara and EV Connection price pages, and about RM1,500 to RM1,900 on three-phase, based on United Power Engineering and EV Connection price pages (checked 20 Oct 2026). These are public prices, not Dispatcher quotes.

Do I need ST approval to set up a home EV charger?

You do not apply to ST yourself. TNB's guide says an ST-registered competent person does the wiring, the charger has the ST-SIRIM label, and it has its own circuit with a 30 mA Type A or Type B RCD.

Do I need TNB approval for a home EV charger?

No. TNB says you do not need its approval to fit a home charger. You only apply to TNB if your home must be upgraded from single-phase to three-phase supply.

Can I fit an EV charger myself?

No. TNB says only an ST-registered competent person or contractor should do EV charger wiring.

Does Dispatcher check contractors' licences?

Not yet. Ask each contractor for their ST registration and check it on the Suruhanjaya Tenaga list before you hire.
