Electrician in Cheras

TL;DR

  • New water heater? It needs its own circuit and its own RCD. An ST-registered electrical contractor should fit it.
  • Heater trips the power? Leave it off and get it checked. Do not keep switching it back on.
  • Shower hose: use one that is not metal or chrome.
  • Need someone? Get quotes on Dispatcher.

Quick answer: A water heater in Cheras should run on its own circuit, with its own RCD, fitted by an electrical contractor registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST). That is what ST's water heater guideline asks for. If yours trips the power, switch it off and ask an electrician to test it.

What ST asks for when a water heater goes in

Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) is the energy regulator. Its guideline for water heaters (GP/ST/No.6/2016) sets out these points:

  • Own circuit. The heater gets a circuit that feeds nothing else.
  • Own safety switch. That circuit has a breaker with an RCD that trips at 10 mA or less.
  • The right person. An ST-registered electrical contractor or wireman does the wiring.
  • The right hose. The shower hose must not be metal or chrome.
  • A test at the end. The earth path is tested before you use it.

A plumber can fit the pipes. The wiring side is for an electrical contractor.

Keep it safe after it goes in

ST gives this care routine in the guideline and in its safety advice:

How often What to do
Every month Press the test button on your RCD. It should trip.
At least every 6 months Have the heater checked and kept up
Every 5 years For a tank heater, replace the pressure relief valve

If the RCD does not trip when you press the button, call an electrician.

The heater trips the power. What now?

  1. Switch off the heater at its own switch.
  2. At the DB box, switch the RCD back on.
  3. If the power stays on with the heater off, the fault is likely in the heater or its circuit.
  4. Leave the heater off and ask an electrician to test it.

If the whole street is dark, it is not your heater. Call TNB on 15454.

How to check who fits your heater

  • Find the firm on the ST list of registered contractors.
  • Ask if the heater will get its own circuit and RCD.
  • Ask which hose they will fit.
  • Ask them to test the earth when they finish.
  • Get the price in writing before work starts.

Dispatcher has not checked these yet. Do this check yourself.

How Dispatcher works

  1. Describe the job and your area.
  2. Ask local businesses for quotes.
  3. You choose one and agree the price with them.

It is free during launch.

When to call an electrician about your heater

Call one if your heater shares a circuit, has no RCD of its own, uses a metal or chrome hose, or keeps tripping. Ask for their ST registration before they start, and ask them to show you the earth test.

Can I use a metal shower hose with an electric heater?

No. ST's guideline says the hose must not be metal or chrome.

How often should I test my RCD?

Once a month. Press the test button. If it does not trip, call an electrician.
