TL;DR

  • Small add-ons like a power point, a light or a fan do not need TNB's written approval if your home stays within its supply limit.
  • They still need a wireman. The work must be done under a wireman who works for an electrical contractor.
  • A fault that keeps coming back needs fault finding, not just a reset.

Small jobs: what the rules say

The Electricity Regulations 1994 cover all wiring work in a home.

  • TNB approval. New wiring or rewiring needs TNB's written approval (regulation 11). A small add-on in a home is the exception, if it keeps within the supply limit agreed with TNB.
  • Who does it. All wiring must be done under the direct watch of a wireman. The wireman works full time for an electrical contractor (regulation 12).
  • Which wireman. ST grades wiremen PW1 to PW4. PW1 or PW2 covers single phase. PW3 or PW4 covers three phase.

If you are not sure your supply can take more, ask the electrician to check before they start.

What to tell them for a quick price

Job What to say
New power point Where the nearest point is
New light The make and model of the light
Ceiling fan If there is a hook or old point
Fault When it trips, and what was on at the time
Any job How old your DB box is

Say if you live in a condo or a landed home. In a condo, check with your management office before work starts.

A fault that keeps coming back

If your RCD trips now and then, myTNB gives safe steps to find the circuit:

  1. With dry hands, switch off all small breakers and the main switch.
  2. Switch on the main switch and the RCD.
  3. Switch on the small breakers one at a time.
  4. Leave off the one that trips the RCD.

That tells you which circuit has the fault. An electrician then tests it to find the cause. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips.

  2. Ask local businesses for quotes.
  3. You choose one and agree the price with them.

It is free during launch.

Before you book a small job

Count the points, lights or fans you want, and note where they go. If a fault keeps coming back, say so in your request and ask for fault finding, not just a reset.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need TNB approval to add a power point in PJ?

No, not for a small add-on, if your home stays within its supply limit. A full rewire does need TNB's written approval.

Who can add a light or a fan?

The work must be done under a wireman who works for an electrical contractor. Ask for the wireman's PW level.

What should I tell them to get a price?

Where the job is, how old your DB box is, and one line about the job.

My RCD trips now and then. What should I do?

Find the circuit by switching the breakers on one at a time. Leave that one off and ask an electrician to test it.

Does Dispatcher check electricians?

Not yet. Look the firm up on the Suruhanjaya Tenaga list yourself.
